Hand-Gesture Technologies Wave Bye to Desktop Mouse

A race to liberate computer users from the mouse is kicking into high gear, inspired by the potential of turning hands and other body parts into digital controllers.

The goal: to manage computers and other devices with gestures rather than pointing and clicking a mouse or touching a display directly. Backers believe that the approach can make it not only easier to carry out many existing chores but also take on trickier tasks such as creating 3-D models, verifying whether clothes fit, training athletes and browsing medical imagery during surgery without touching anything.

Such possibilities have spurred furious action at …

City Tech’s ADGA to Hold Third Annual Portfolio Review

City Tech’s ADGA to Hold Third Annual Portfolio Review

Monday, May 21, 2012

Press release from the issuing company

The Department of Advertising Design and Graphic Arts (ADGA), New York City College of Technology (City Tech), will conduct its third annual student portfolio review on Thursday, May 24, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The review will take place in the Times Square offices of Adobe Systems Inc., the host of the event.

More than 90 graduating ADGA students will present their work to City Tech faculty and industry professionals in a series of 45-minute sessions. ADGA hopes to attract enough outside attendance so that each student’s portfolio can be critiqued by two or three experts in related fields.

“As in previous years, one of our goals is to gather information that will help us keep our curriculum relevant to the current needs of industry and its employing companies,” said M. Genevieve Hitchings, assistant professor, ADGA. “Portfolio reviews also let students practice their interview skills and receive honest feedback on their work in a non-competitive environment.”

“Most important, portfolio reviews also give senior-level students an opportunity to network with potential employers,” Hitchings said.

The reviews will begin at 3:30 p.m. and run at 45-minutes intervals until 7:15 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., ADGA will announce three winners for the most outstanding portfolios.

Industry members wishing to take part in the reviews should RSVP to MHitchings@CityTech.Cuny.Edu. Pre-registration is necessary for admission to the space being provided by Adobe at 1540 Broadway, New York, NY, on the 17th floor (entrance on 45th Street).

ADGA has promoted the event with a postcard designed by one of its students, Alfredo Lopez, who specializes in web and mobile design, online advertising, and brand identity. Printing was provided by Duggal Visual Solutions, which ran the job on an HP Indigo 5500 digital color press at its production center in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Duggal, a supporter of City Tech, also has hosted field trips that introduce ADGA students to many of the latest technologies for graphic imaging and reproduction.

ADGA held its first portfolio review at the Openhouse Gallery in SoHo  in December 2010. Last year, the event took place at the Type Director’s Club in midtown Manhattan.

With an enrollment of about 1,300 students, ADGA is the largest academic department at City Tech. It offers degree programs in the career tracks of advertising and graphic design, interactive media, broadcast graphics, illustration, and graphic arts management.

ADGA graduates have gone on to successful careers at Condé Nast, The New York Times, Hearst, Essence Inc., Deutsch, EURO RSCG, DraftFCB, Grey Advertising, and many other firms.

Looking for the latest in Disruptive Technology Firms: Track RedHerring Top … – SYS

cb960 b1png 100 Looking for the latest in Disruptive Technology Firms: Track RedHerring Top ... SYS

Red Herring America’s is a conference starting on Monday 21 May (here is the agenda). This is an invitation only event. But if you are not going there should be plenty of information flowing out of the conference, it is widely attended by IT thought leaders and will be covered by Red Herring, of course.

This event is important to track for many reasons. One is that this is a great way to track emerging firms that can have a significant positive impact on your enterprise. For example, we now know the list of firms that will be presenting at the event as part of the competition for the Top 100 North America Award.

Red Herring posted the list of presenters, and we have pasted them below.  We note some fantastic firms are here, including companies we have reported extensively on like Cloudera.

Congrats to all nominees for this great recognition. We will be tracking you all and will add winners to our searchable directory of enterprise IT firms.

The following is from Red Herring at: http://www.redherring.com/red-herring-americas/americas-2012-presenting-companies/

Over two days, the following companies will deliver a presentation as part of the competition for the Top 100 North America Award.  The presentations are open to everyone.  We encourage you to join the sessions, ask questions and get to know the technologies and CEOs that are changing the landscape. I am sure you will find interesting business or investment synergies.  As importantly, the judging process involves an element of peer review.  No one knows better than an entrepreneur the daily challenge of running and growing a business.  Ask the “though” questions.  The judges are listening.

Five ideas that could help tech blossom

What is the government’s role in developing new technology? Some would say to stay out of the way. Dr. Farzad Mostashari, the national coordinator for health information technology, said that’s overly cynical.

But, Mostashari said in an interview, government is no longer the major producer of innovative products and services that it once was, creating things for military purposes or space exploration that work their way into the consumer market.

“That’s not the model anymore,” he said. “The investments in research and development that are going on in the consumer technology space are now dwarfing the investment and innovation that are happening in, say, the military.”

Mostashari was in Boston last week to speak at the Health 2.0 conference about his vision for what the government can do to pave the way for new technologies in health care. He laid out his main points, five things government can do to foster innovation:

Investing in academic research and development,
the old-fashioned way. He cited, as an example, the SMART project (a catchy acronym for a clumsy name: Substitutable Medical Apps, Reusable Technology) at Boston Children’s Hospital, where doctors Zak Kohane and Ken Mandl are developing a system of “iPhone-like” medical apps designed so they can be easily swapped out when better ones are developed but that allow for easy saving and transfer of data to a new program.

Create a space
for identifying new ideas. Mostashari pointed to the 17 communities designated by his office as places to try out new technologies.

Provide data.
The government collects a lot of health care data on a regular basis. Mostashari said his office is working to make more of that available to developers who can “crunch and slice and dice and make use of in apps and services that people might enjoy.”

“Smart regulation
can unleash innovation, if we think about the little guy, if we don’t make the regulation so that it gives an advantage to the biggest players, to the ones with the ability to navigate the greatest complexity,” Mostashari said.

There are more than 700 certified vendors of electronic health records. More than 60 percent of them have 50 or fewer employees, Mostashari said. One way to help the smaller developer is to create industry standards for the development of electronic health records, he said.

Promote competition.
The Office of the National Coordinator has supported a developer competition run by Health 2.0. Competitors are given a challenge to tackle a tough issue in medicine and technology, such as how to improve communication when a patient is discharged from a hospital to a rehab facility or nursing home. Last week, the group announced the latest challenge, to connect ophthalmologists’ many imaging tools and databases with an electronic health record.

Nasdaq to revamp system after tech problems on Facebook IPO

The Nasdaq is planning to revamp its systems for handling stock offerings after acknowledging that technology problems had affected trading in millions of newly issued Facebook shares on Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Individual investors were left in the dark for hours on Friday about whether their buy and sell orders for Facebook shares had actually been executed, in the latest of a series high-profile exchange glitches.

Nasdaq Omx Group Inc Chief Executive Robert Greifeld said in a conference call with reporters on Sunday that there had been a malfunction in the trading-system’s design for processing order cancellations, the Journal reported.

Greifeld also said extensive testing that was performed ahead of the deal failed to spot this problem.

Nasdaq officials said the company is planning to redesign its IPO systems, according to the Journal, although it did not give further details.

Investor confidence in the equity markets, where trading is largely computer-driven, has wavered since the “flash crash” in May 2010 when $1 trillion in shareholder equity was temporarily wiped out in a matter of minutes.

In March, the botched IPO of BATS Global Markets, the third-largest U.S. stock exchange, refocused attention on the potential for marketplace mishaps. A series of unforeseen glitches hit the company’s market debut on its own exchange and caused it to take the extremely rare step of withdrawing its IPO.
